Wednesday, October 13th, 2010
Time:
7:30pm - 9:30pm
Location:
425R Broadway Saugus MA 01906
http://www.roller-world.com/

It's the occasional community skate night- come out and enjoy loud music picked by your hosts- we take requests- have pizza, great ice cream. There's some skee-ball and air hockey and plenty of socializing opportunities; those less inclined to skate will be pleasantly diverted, I hope.
There's a kiddie/practice rink for those less sure of their skill and for rug-rats. You will NOT be the only one to say that night "I've not done this in N>10 years!

Yes, bring your friends. Yes, come if you don't know the hosts, no you don't have to ask in advance. We want a good crowd of happy skaters!

Cost: the rental for the 2 hours is $350. We set up a donation box and request people put in what they can to help defray the cost. That amount is absolutely up to you.

Roller skating party in TWO DAYS, yay!
[Facebook invite here.]

So! Roller skating! Wednesday night, 7pm-9pm! Roller World in Saugus! Directions are here! Exclamation point!

Thing is, Roller World is not tremendously T-accessible, and so we have people who need rides. This is the place to find them. Well, this and the Facebook invite's wall.

So if you have space in your car, or if you require a ride, please comment here and we'll get you matched up! Do please note where you're coming from to make matching-up easier so I'm not pairing people from Davis Square with people from Melrose or anything. We like easy and convenient. :)

'Song's Birthday Skating Party March 3! <3
March 3, Roller World, 7-9pm!

Yes! A roller-skating birthday party! Because I staunchly refuse to grow up.

Plus I'll be 36, and therefore square. And y'all know that's hip.

Also there will be a Spider-Man birthday cake, the very finest and, in some cases, cheesiest music, and just a whole lot of everyone being silly. ♥ Bring your own sweet self, your friends, your kids, your SOs. The more the merrier! Gifts not required; if you can chip in a few bucks towards the cost of rental, that'd be awesome. :)

And no, you don't *have* to skate. They also party who merely sit at the sidelines and heckle. ;)

RSVP on Facebook if you're there, here if you're not. :)

Great Skate, revised how-to
Thanks to all who came out- another successful skate night with lots of nostalgic songs, bad pizza, and tasty ice cream. If you missed this round, I can promise there will be another.
If anyone's hoping to get in on hosting their own party, here are some quick tips that are similar to last year's list, but with some further insight:

Cost-
1. Cost to rent Roller World for a 2 hour private party is $350- they request $50 of that in a deposit when you reserve the day. Call Roller World to set that up. Their site lists their schedule.
2. You can have up to 100 people attend without issue. After that, they start charging per person rather than the flat fee
3. Have a donation box available and well-marked. Anywhere from $5-15 seems about right, depending on how many people attend.
4. Surplus funds should go to the next skate night
5. The remaining $300 is traditionally paid at the end of the skate session with the contents of said donation box, so no undue burden- Ideally there should be enough to repay the one who put the deposit down, too.

Food-
6. Roller World has a well stocked snack bar with pizza and other standard concession stand fare. They usually run a tab, which is settled up with the rest, particularly if there's a donation surplus. Also- they sell Richardson's ice cream.
7. No outside food is allowed, with one exception: birthday cake. You do need to let them know if you're doing this. They have a freezer big enough for an ice cream sheet cake, too- by the way.

Music-
8. They have their own music library and they'll let you pick out the whole play list. Thus far, they have not had the set-up for plugging in an ipod. If the host wants to choose the play list they should come a bit early to pick out the songs. I recommend starting with the "retro" playlist. AKA: the 80s. :/
Alternatively, you can just ask them to play something. They have it set up by type of music and various play lists.

Invites-
9. This is up to you- but in order to get optimal turn-out, I have made my invitations entirely open to friends/communities. I cross post to my own journal, send out email, and create a facebook event.
10. Request RSVPs, as Roller World will be asking how many to expect the day before or day of the party- they'll want a general notion so they have enough staff.
11. Like with any party, expect a certain number of no-shows and surprise inclusions.

Skates-
12. There' s no additional cost to use their quad skates. It's covered in the rental cost. You can rent inline skates for a small fee.
13. They allow you to bring your own skates if you have them. They may check the condition and if you have breaks.

I find that setting these parties up is remarkably easy and low stress. I'm happy to help out if any of you have the desire for a party but not the inclination to make it happen, or if you just want guidance/clarification.

7/30 skate party reminder
Hey!
Just a quick reminder that I'm hosting an open invite skating party on Thursday 7/30 from 7-9pm. Useful details listed here.

If you have the option to RSVP in Facebook, that would help my efficiency levels, but comments here, too, work fine. But the very short version is: YES, do come, do bring friends. I don't mind if you aren't personally acquainted with me, s'long as you've got your company manners on, which of course you would being such lovely and genteel that you are.

Hi folks,
Just a reminder that the next planned skating event. Hope to see you there!
We hope that guests will be able to help us defray the cost of the rink rental with a suggested donation of $7-10 per adult. Mulit-kid families, students, unemployed: we would rather see you there than have money you can't spare. Feel free to ping me on this or any other point.

Why:  Because...face it....we've always dreamed of having the rink to ourselves....
Who: You, your SO(s), kids, that random friend who likes to skate. Sure, bring 'em! The place is as big as a airplane hangar, so the more the merrier. Please RSVP by April 13th so we can give the rink an approximate head-count.
People wrangling: As ever, any and all excessive drama will be recorded and posted to a variety of social media sites. Parents are responsible for their kids' noggins and limbs, also per usual.

Please do note that skating is not required to attend! Did we mention there's air hockey and ski ball, as well as aweseome music, awful pizza, slurpees, socializing and guaranteed shadenfreude when Jenn falls on her butt?

SCUL Skate Party in Beverly

followup to yesterday's post
a fortuitous, though non-chance encounter with noire and several others produced two pieces of relevant information, namely that 1) many people are, or will soon be on vacation, and 2) at least three members of the saugussk8 group (including yours truly) have birthdays in the late-september timeframe (*).

this led us to begin vaguely planning a skate run for sometime in the last week of september. (others are, of course, welcome to plan something for before then!)

i think that when we get closer to time, those of us at this party who are celebrating birthdays will coordinate this a bit better and figure out what the plan will be. for now, anyone who has a birthday in the late september/early october timeframe, please feel free to make yourselves known and let's work on securing a date.

for your amusement, we came up with a possible theme for the skate party: balancing. (**)

(*) i've always wondered if, statistically, certain dates or ranges are more represented by birthdays. in particular, i've been curious as to whether late september/early october is specifically better represented. my theory about this, for what it's worth, is that christmas of 1965 might have been a particularly good one, and i was the result... :)

(**) september 23 is the beginning of Libra, whose sign is the scales -- representing balance. seems apropos for roller skating!

Skate Recap & How To Host
Well, we had a LOT of last minute drop-outs, but despite that, we had enough to pay the remainder of the skate fee and I was able to get the extra I put in for the deposit. We even have an extra $13 towards the next time! Thanks to everyone who attended- hope to see you all again next time. I created a cash box - it and the extra cash are with noire at this point.

For those who want to take over hosting, here's what happens-
1. Determine a date that will yield at least 35  people will be able to go (at $10/person).
RollerWorld's schedule is here, but Monday, Wednesday, Thursday evenings are usual private party nights, 7-9pm.
2. Call RollerWorld to secure the date. They need a $50 deposit. Credit cards are easiest to deal with. The total they want for a private party is $350.
3. They do not require the remainder (300) until the end of the party, and they're good with cash.
4. Be sure to advertise at saugussk8 your own journal and/or email list and encourage people to cross post.
5. This, being the first official community skate, we don't have a lot of info to go on. Future organizers may want to try to gather the fee in advance. It may reduce the stress. Personally, I didn't want to deal with keeping track ahead of time.

At this point we have 44 folks in the community. I think if we can get up to 80 people who have a more than a passing interest, planning and getting minimum numbers for events will be lower stress.

I think I've got the big issues covered.
